How can I improve my eyesight?
Sight is one of our most important senses. Yet we don't take enough care of our eyes! In this article, find out how to improve your vision and keep your eyes in good condition.
What is orthoptics?
Orthoptics is a medical specialty that focuses on vision and eye movement disorders. Orthoptists, medical professionals trained to diagnose and treat these disorders, help patients improve their vision and their ability to use their eyes together. At our Klarity eye centers, our orthoptists work hand-in-hand with our ophthalmologists to ensure seamless patient care.
Orthoptists, who specialize in visual acuity, can diagnose many vision disorders, such as :
- Strabismus,
- The "lazy eye",
- Vergence or convergence problems,
- Diplopia,
- Double vision,
- Problems with fixation or binocular vision,
- Distant and near vision problems...
- And many more besides.
Orthoptists use techniques such as orthoptic re-education, visual rehabilitation, glasses, contact lenses and behavioral therapies to help patients improve their vision. They can also advise and suggest exercises to combat eyestrain.
Exercises for eyestrain
Eye strain can be caused by excessive use of screens, reading books or printed material, or any other activity that requires strong visual concentration. Fortunately, there are simple exercises to relieve eyestrain and improve vision!
Here are our tips for relieving eyestrain:
- Cover your eyes with your palms for five to ten minutes to block out the light. This exercise reduces eye strain and relaxes the eye muscles. Give your eyes a rest!
- Rotate your eyes in different directions to improve eye flexibility. To do this, sit comfortably and look in different directions (up, down, right, left) with slow, controlled turning movements. Repeat this exercise several times a day.
- Stare at a point 1 to 2 meters away for about 10 seconds to strengthen visual concentration. Take breaks and repeat the exercise several times.
- Blink rapidly for a few seconds to hydrate your eyes and reduce eye strain. We also recommend blinking every 20 minutes or so if you're working on a screen.
- Opt for a diet rich in vitamins C, A and B2. These vitamins are excellent for eye health. We also recommend eating plenty of green vegetables, as they help protect your macula.
- Wear sunglasses! The sun's ultraviolet rays are harmful to your eyes and can cause irreversible damage to your retina.
It is important to remember that these exercises are not intended to replace medical care. We recommend that you consult a healthcare professional at our Klarity eye center.
Why choose an ophthalmologist?
There are many reasons why we recommend you see an ophthalmologist. Here are some of the most common:
- If you notice any changes in your vision (blurring, distortion, near or far vision problems, night vision problems...), it's important to consult an ophthalmologist.
- If you notice red, itchy, watery or painful eyes, you may have an eye infection or eye disease. An ophthalmologist can diagnose the cause of these symptoms and prescribe treatment.
- An ophthalmologist can also identify systemic diseases that have ocular manifestations, such as diabetes, lupus, multiple sclerosis and aging, among others.
- An ophthalmologist is qualified to perform eye surgery to correct vision problems such as cataracts, myopia, hyperopia, astigmatism and presbyopia.
- If you have an eye disease, such as glaucoma or age-related macular degeneration, an ophthalmologist can monitor your progress on a regular basis and prescribe the appropriate treatments.
